Hey Pete. Volunteer jobs are work, and we tend to dismiss the actual work that's involved. One way to talk about this is to change the description to Consulting work. For example, most PTA work centers aroung fundraising. Consider characterizing that work as fundraising consultant responsible for an annual raise of $50,000, a 48% increase in income raised from the year prior, rather than a PTA role. When someone asks you if you were paid, your response is something like "I engaged in a series of consulting engagements, both paid and pro bono." Does that help?

I've been a SAHD and done a ton of community volunteer work - I've served on the PTA, local community council and at my church. Do those jobs count if I'm looking for a job? How do I talk about them?

Please be polite, professional and productive in our forums (and we know you know that!) The Swing Shift provides programs and services for women who are looking to shift roles or careers, or get back into the workplace after a break. We work with employers across the U.S. to reincorporate this hidden talent pool back into the workforce. We also provide corporate programming focused on recruiting, retention and returnships. Finally we provide workshops, consulting and placement services.
